Sandanski is a town and a recreation centre in south-western Bulgaria, part of Blagoevgrad Province. Named after Yane Sandanski (a revolutionary recognized as a national hero in Bulgaria and the Republic of Macedonia), the town is situated in a valley at the foot of Pirin Mountains. The area around the modern Sandanski is populated for more than three thousand years. Archaeologists found here layers of the earliest human history. Thracians, Romans and Byzantines have inhabited these lands. They have left a rich cultural and architectural heritage in the form of impressive artefacts and colourful palette of folk traditions and customs. At the very entrance of Sandanski the legendary Thracian chieftain from the Medi tribe - Spartak, welcomes tourists. According to legend, the leader of the largest uprising of slaves in the Roman Empire was born and raised on the in the surroundings of the village, called by the Romans Partikopol. The ancient ruins narrate the fascinating tale of the ancient city, which has become one of the first Episcopal centers ever since the early Christianity. Outstanding findings from that time are now arranged in an impressive architectural complex.
