The Project and Course


General Information

Description: The project packages are combination of three Balkan Heritage Field School (BHFS) projects covering major chronological periods (Late Neolithic, Archaic Greek, Classical, Hellenistic and Late Antiquity periods) and civilizations (the first European civilization in the Copper Age, Ancient Greek and Byzantine) of world's and Europe's history. For students, as well as others interested in archaeology, history and anthropology, it provides a comprehensive learning, field and intercultural experience for six weeks at three different types of sites in Bulgaria. What is more, by choosing to participate in the EUROPEAN ARCHAEOLOGY IN BRIEF - ALL IN ONE PACK the BHFS participants will benefit from considerably reduced admission fees (15 %) and faster registration. Additionally, the program has amazing travel opportunities to sites and historic towns in Bulgaria. 

Package type: Field school & archaeological excavation. Suitable for both beginner and advanced students as well as those interested in archaeology, history and anthropology. Individual program and task assignments are available to advanced students.

Sites combined in the Package:

EA.PACK 18-1: Apollonia Pontica - sector of the the ancient city's sacred precinct (temenos) located on St. Kirik Island, Sozopol, Tell Yunatsite, near Pazardzhik and Early Christian monastery on Janavara hill near Varna, all in Bulgaria.

EA.PACK 18-2: Tell Yunatsite, near Pazardzhik, Emporion Pistiros in Thrace and Early Christian monastery on Janavara hill near Varna, all in Bulgaria.

Periods of occupation: Late Neolithic or Copper Age, 4900 - 4100 BCE - Tell Yunatsite; Archaic and Classical Greek as well as Hellenistic (7th - 3rd century BCE) - Apollonia Pontica; Classical Greek and Hellenistic (4th - 3rd century BCE) - Emporion Pistiros; Early Byzantine (5th - 6th century CE) - Varna.

Projects' partners: The Balkan Heritage Foundation; archaeological teams of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at Bulgarian Academy of Science; Regional Museum of History, Pazardzhik; Archaeological Museum of Sozopol; Archaeological Museum of Septemvri; New Bulgarian University (Bulgaria);

Venues of the projects in the Pack: the towns of Pazardzhik, Sozopol and Varna and the village of Karabuar, Bulgaria

Minimum length of stay: Six weeks

Minimum age: 18 (16, if the participant is accompanied by an adult family member)

Experience required: No

Special requirements: Participation in the Pack is not recommended for individuals with solar allergies or other special illnesses that might be exacerbated during intensive outdoor activities. The average summer temperature at different locations in the area varies from 20°C/68°F to 35°C/95°F. Participants should bring clothes and cosmetics suitable for hot and sunny weather but should consider also possible rainy, windy and chilly days. They are expected to prepare for the digs by reading at least the BHFS handbooks that will be sent by e-mail before the beginning of each project. Participants will use the tools and equipment available at the sites and are not expected to bring any additional equipment.

      Travel - EA.PACK 18 -1    

      Venues of the projects in the Pack:

      1. Sozopol 

        on the Black Sea coast
      2. Pazardzhik (near Tell Yunatsite)
      3. Varna, the biggest Bulgarian town on the Black Sea Coast.

      How to get there:

      Participants should arrive first in the city of Sozopol.   

      The nearest air terminals: Burgas airport (45 km/28 mi), Varna airport (160 km/100 mi). don't forget to check the low-cost flight options! If participants arrive at one of these airports, a transfer to Sozopol may be arranged by request (please, specify this in your application form!). Transfers prices are:

      Burgas - Sozopol - 26 EUR (50 BGN); Varna - Sozopol - 102 EUR (200 BGN); Sofia - Sozopol - 204 EUR (400 BGN).

      Transfers can be shared by several participants.

      How to get there? Bus lines connect Sozopol with Burgas, Sofia (the Bulgarian capital) and Plovdiv.

      A detailed travel-info sheet will be provided to enrolled students.

      Travel between the field school projects in the Pack:   

      Sozopol - Pazardzhikis (300 km/186 mi):

      - Organized transfer. The price may vary depending on the number of passengers from 45 to 180 EUR. 

      - Bus, with the following combinations:

      Sozopol - Burgas - 30 min

      Burgas - Plovdiv - 4 hrs

      Plovdiv - Pazardzhik - 45 min

      or

      Sozopol - Sofia - 5 ½ hrs

      Sofia - Pazardzhik - 1 ½ hrs

      Approximate cost of the entire trip: 20 - 25 EUR;      

      Pazardzhik - Varna   

      - Bus, with the following combinations:    

      Pazardzhik - Sofia- 5 ½ hrs   

      Sofia - Varna - 5 ½ hrs       

         

      Approximate cost of the entire trip: 25 - 30 EUR;

      Participants will be fully supported by the BHFS staff when planning and arranging their trips between the pack's locations.

         

      Travel - EA.PACK 18 - 2 

      Venues of the projects in the Pack:

      1. Pazardzhik (near Tell Yunatsite)
      2. Karabunar (near Emporion Pistiros)
      3. Varna, the biggest Bulgarian town on the Black Sea Coast.

      How to get there:

      Participants should arrive first in the city of Pazardzhik.The town is 118 km/73 mi away from the Bulgarian capital Sofia. If participants arrive at the Sofia airport, a transfer to  Hotel Primavera 2 in Pazardzhuk may be arranged by request (Please, specify this in your application form!). Individual or group transfer prices may vary, depending on the number of passengers, from 25 to 75 EUR. Ask for details! Participants who arrange their travel individually will be expected to arrive at Hotel Primavera 2 on the arrival day by 7.30 pm. It may be reached by bus from Sofia (app. 1 ½ hrs) and from Plovdiv (30-50 min). A detailed travel-info sheet will be provided to enrolled students.

      Travel between the field school projects in the Pack:

      Pazardzhik- Karabunar

      Organized transfer covered by the participation fee (35 min)

      Karabunar - Varna

      1. Bus from Karabunar to Sofia (1,5 hours)

      2. Bus from Sofia to Varna (approx. 5 hours)

      The entire trip costs approx. 30 Euro

      Students will be fully supported by the BHFS when planning and arranging their trip between the Pack's locations.

  

Accommodation & Meals & Free Time & Practicalities

    

Accommodation and 3 meals per day are fully covered by the admission fee for Tell Yunatsite Excavations – Seeking Europe's First CivilizationAncient Greeks in the Land of Dionysos - Excavation of Emporion Pistiros in Thrace and Byzantine Cold Case File. Excavations of an Early Christian Monastery near Varna. Bed & Breakfast is covered for Apollonia Pontica Excavations

    The Admission fee of 3500 Euro (approx. 3940 USD) includes: Educational and fieldwork activities, full-board accommodation (hotel + 3 meals per day) in Pazardzhik and Varna and Bed & Breakfast in Sozopol, tools, materials, project handbook, issue of Certificate of Attendance, excursions/sightseeing tours/entrance fees and administrative costs. It does not cover the travel and accommodation costs (if any) for the days between the different field school project sessions in the Pack!

    Academic Credits   

     

    New Bulgarian University grants up to 18 ECTS* credits to all students in European universities for participation in the field school projects that are part of the EUROPEAN ARCHAEOLOGY IN BRIEF - ALL IN ONE PACK. Participation in any two-week session of each of the field school projects in the pack is awarded with 6 credit hours (ECTS)*. Participants are allowed to obtain credits for particular field school project sessions and so they have a choice between 6, 12 (6+6) and 18 (6+6+6) ECTS credits. Transcripts of Records (ToR) are available upon request for an additional tuition fee. For details please read the Regulations for obtaining Transcripts of Records!
