The Project and Course


   

General Information

Description: The pack is combination of two Balkan Heritage Field School (BHFS) projects focused on Ancient Greek Archaeology, History and Culture. It provides to either students or people interested in Archaeology and Ancient Greek World, a comprehensive experience (from four to eight weeks, covering the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods) at two different sites: an emporion and a sanctuary, both located in Bulgaria..Additionally, choosing to participate in the pack, participants will benefit from the considerably reduced admission fees and faster registration.

Package type: field school & archaeological excavation. The variety of activities and team flexibility make this project package suitable for both beginners and advanced in Field Archaeology. Individual program and task assignment are available to advanced students.

Sites: Apollonia Pontica - sector of the the ancient city's sacred precinct (temenos) located on St. Kirik Island, Sozopol and Ancient Greek emporion Pistiros near the town of Karabunar, Southern Bulgaria.

Period(s) of occupation: Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic (7th century - 3rd century BCE)

Project Partners: Balkan Heritage Foundation, Pistiros excavation team: National Archaeological Institute with Museum at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Regional Museum of History, Pazardzhik, "Prof. Mieczyslaw Domaradzki" Archaeological Museum in Septemvri, New Bulgarian University (Bulgaria); "Pistiros" Association; Apollonia Pontica excavation team, Archaeological Museum of Sozopol 

Venues of the projects in the Pack: Sozopol and Karabunar, Bulgaria. Participants in the pack will be expected to arrive first in Sozopol, Bulgaria.

Application Deadline: until the places are filled, or latest 1 May, 2020

Minimum length of stay: 3 sessions (six weeks)

Minimum age: 18 (16, if the participant is accompanied by an adult family member)

Experience required: No

Special requirements: Participation in the project package is not recommended for individuals with solar allergies or other special illnesses that might be exacerbated during the intensive outdoor activities. The average summer temperatures in the area are 25-38 C or higher. All participants should bring clothes and cosmetics suitable for hot and sunny weather. All participants are expected to prepare for the dig by reading (at least) the BHFS handbook (will be sent in pdf by e-mail to all registered students before the beginning of the project)! Participants will use the tools and equipment available at the site and are not expected to bring any additional equipment.

Travel & Accommodation   


Travel

Venues of the projects in the Pack: Sozopol and the village of Karabunar, Bulgaria. Participants in the pack will be expected to arrive first in Sozopol, Bulgaria.

The nearest air terminals: Burgas airport (45 km/28 mi), Varna airport (160 km/100 mi). If participants arrive at the one of these airports, a transfer to Sozopol may be arranged by request. Individual or group transfers' price may vary depending on both distance and number of passengers from 20 to 100 EUR. Ask for details!

How to get there? Bus lines connect Sozopol with Burgas and Sofia (the Bulgarian capital).

   

Travel between the field school projects in the pack: Sozopol is located about 300 km/186 mi from the village of Karabunar and can be reached by

  • organized transfer. The price may vary depending on the number of passengers from 45 to 180 EUR.
  • bus, with the following options:
  1. Sozopol - Burgas - 30 min   
  2. Burgas - Plovdiv - 4 hrs
  3. Plovdiv - Septemvri - 40 min  
  4. Septemvri - Karabunar - 20 min

 or

  1. Sozopol - Sofia - 5 hrs  
  2. Sofia - Karabunar - 1 ½

Approximate cost of the entire trip: 20 - 25 EUR;

Participants will be fully supported by the BHFS staff when planning and arranging their trips between the pack's locations.

Academic Credits   

 

New Bulgarian University (NBU) grants up to 18 credits to students in European universities for participation in the field school project sessions that are part of the ANCIENT GREEK PACK. Participation in any two-week/four-week session of each of the field school projects in the pack is awarded with 6/9 credit hours (ECTS)*. Participants in the various sessions of the ANCIENT GREEK PACK can obtain maximum of 18 ECTS* credits (Please refer to the list below!). They are allowed to require credits only for particular field school project sessions in the Pack, so practically they have choice between 6, 12, 15 and 18 ECTS credits.

Connecticut College (CC) could grant 8 semester credit units (equivalent to 12 quarter units) to all students who study outside Europe for attending the four-week sessions of this field school pack.  must apply to the BHF-IFR Program for the Balkans and enroll through the Institute for Field Research (IFR), USA.
