We are pleased to announce that the 2021-2022 Fulbright competition cycle for the U.S. Student Program “Study/Research Award for Archaeology/History”, hosted by Balkan Heritage Foundation in Bulgaria is now open! The grant provides an opportunity for students to conduct research in areas related to both Balkan archaeology, and museum and heritage studies. The special grant is a result of the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission’s partnership with the Balkan Heritage Foundation (BHF).
Upon arrival in Bulgaria in August/September 2021, the grantee will receive ongoing academic guidance from BHF and our academic partners, as well as attend a field school at the beginning or end of their grant period. The student may also take a university course to expand their knowledge and network with other academics. Grantees will be expected to produce a tangible outcome – paper, conference presentation, etc. – from their research by the end of the grant period.
The award is suitable for individuals whose ongoing research or research interest is related to one of the following topics:
Candidates are strongly encouraged to attend either of two information sessions organized by the Balkan Heritage Foundation (www.bhfieldschool.org) on Skype in late June and early September, 2020, to discuss which field schools and research areas would be most appropriate to this grant.
"Through the support of the Balkan Heritage team and the Fulbright commissions in Bulgaria and Greece, I was able to finish the research for my dissertation project and to begin writing my analysis. As my host institution, Balkan Heritage provided me invaluable support as I tracked down publications and made connections with Bulgarian and Greek archaeologists that were vital to the success of my research. Even more valuable to me was how Balkan Heritage's partnership with Fulbright led me to more deeply appreciate the cultural heritage of Bulgaria and Greece as well as the vibrancy of modern life in these countries." - Matthew Schueller, Fulbright student |
All field school and stay fees are covered by the Fulbright grant except in the case of the Underwater Archaeology Field School, where the grant covers 50% of the field school fee.
Competition deadline: Tuesday October 13, 2020 at 5 pm Eastern Time
