BHF-CFS Program for the Balkans   


Balkan Heritage Foundation (BHF), Bulgaria, and the Center for Field Sciences, USA started a strategic partnership and created the BHF-CFS Program for the Balkans

For the 2025 season, the  BHF-IFR Program for the Balkans will include the following one to four-week project sessions:    

1. Archaeology of Apollonia Pontica           

FOUR-WEEK SESSION / 8 Semester Credits: 1 - 28 June, 2025 - This field school features archaeological excavation at a Classical and Late Hellenistic site. The variety of activities and the team's professionalism and flexibility make this project suitable for beginners and advanced students in both Anthropology and Classical Archaeology. Individual program and task assignments are available to advanced students. Please see the field school description on the CFS website.

2.  Birth of Europe - Excavations at the Neolithic site of Amzabegovo      

THREE-WEEK SESSION/ 6 Semester Credits:  5 - 26 July, 2025 - Field School & Archaeological Excavation. This program is suitable for both beginners and advanced students, as well as anyone interested in archaeology, prehistory, and early farming communities in the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe during the Neolithic period. 3. ''Fresco-Hunting'' Photo Research Expedition to Medieval Balkan Churches

TWO WEEK SESSION/ 4 Semester Credit Units: 24 May - 07 June, 2025, 2025 -  Participants will study, receive training, and work on documenting medieval Christian Orthodox chapels and small churches in western Bulgaria and eastern Serbia. Please see the field school description on the CFS website.

4. Tell Yunatsite Excavations – Seeking Europe's First Civilization

TWO/FOUR-WEEK SESSION / up to 8 Semester Credit Units: Session 1:12 - 26 July, 2025; Session 2: 26 July - 9 August, 2025; Session 3: 12 July - 9 August, 2025 -  Field school & archaeological excavation. Suitable for both beginner and advanced students as well as those interested in archaeology and history of the eastern Mediterranean and Europe during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods.  Please see the field school description on the CFS website.

5. Workshop for Conservation of Ancient Greek Pottery

TWO-WEEK SESSION / 4 Semester Credits: 7 - 21 June, 2025 - Field school and conservation workshop. The various activities and team flexibility make this project suitable for both beginners and advanced (volunteers or students) in conservation. 6. Workshop for Conservation of Metal

TWO-WEEK SESSION / 4 Semester Credits: 1 - 14 June, 2025 - The workshop enables participants to gain comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in metal conservation. Please see the field school description on the CFS website.

7. Workshops for Conservation of Metal, Paper and Textiles

THREE-WEEK SESSION / 6 Semester Credits: 25 May - 14 June, 2025 - The workshop enables participants to gain comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in metal conservation. Please see the field school description on the CFS website.

8. Workshop for Conservation of Paper

TWO-WEEK SESSION / 4 Semester Credits: 8 - 21 June, 2025  -  The workshop enables participants to gain comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in paper conservation.  Please see the field school description on the CFS website.

9. Workshop for Conservation of Roman Glass

TWO-WEEK SESSION / 4 Semester Credits: 7 - 21 June, 2025 - Field school and conservation workshop. The various activities and team flexibility make this project suitable for both beginners and advanced (volunteers or students) in conservation.  Please see the field school description on the CFS website.

10. Workshop for Conservation of Textile

TWO-WEEK SESSION / 4 Semester Credits: 25 May - 7 June, 2025 - The workshop enables participants to gain comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in textile conservation.  Please see the field school description on the CFS website.

11. Workshop for Physicochemical Analysis of Metal Objects and Ceramics

TWO-WEEK SESSION / up to 4 Semester Credits: Session 1: 22 - 28 June, 2025; Session 2: 29 June - 05 July, 2025; Session 3: 22 June - 05 July, 2025 - Participants will be guided through the History and Construction technology of ethnographic and archaeological ceramics or metal objects and consequent stages of their study and documentation..  Please see the field school description on the CFS website.

Students interested attending any of these field school sessions and benefiting from the Program’s advantages should apply through CFS.   

   

All applicants to the Balkan Heritage Field School who don’t need academic credit units or attend an European university/college and would like to obtain European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) credit units awarded by the New Bulgarian University (Bulgaria) should enroll directly through the Balkan Heritage Field School.
