The Project and Course


General Information

Description: The pack is combination of two Balkan Heritage Field School (BHFS) projects focused on Ancient Greek and Roman Archaeology, History and Culture. It provides to either students or people interested in Archaeology and Ancient Greek and Roman World comprehensive experience (from four to eight weeks, covering the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Early Byzantine periods) at two different sites in two neighboring European countries: Emporion Pistiros in Bulgaria and Stobi in Macedonia. What is more choosing to participate in the pack’s proposals the BHFS participants will benefit from the considerably reduced admission fees and faster registration.

Package type: field school & archaeological excavation.The variety of activities and team flexibility make this project package suitable for both Beginners and Advanced in Field Archaeology. Individual program and task assignment are available to advanced students.

Sites: Roman and Late Roman city of Stobi, Republic of Macedonia and Ancient Greek emporion Pistiros, Bulgaria

Period(s) of occupation: in Pistiros: Classical Antiquity - Classical and Hellenistic; in Stobi: Roman, Late Roman.

Experience required: No

Special requirements: Participation in the project package is not recommended for individuals with solar allergies or other special illnesses that might be exacerbated during the intensive outdoor activities. The average summer temperatures in the area are 25-38 C or higher. All participants should bring clothes and cosmetics suitable for hot and sunny weather. All participants are expected to prepare for the dig by reading (at least) the BHFS handbook chapter about archaeological excavation techniques and methods (the BHFS e-handbook will be sent by e-mail to all registered students before the beginning of the project)! Participants will use the tools and equipment available at the site and are not expected to bring any additional equipment.

Travel & Accommodation   


Travel  

Venues of the projects in the Pack: National institution Stobi, Macedonia and the village of Karabunar, Pazardzhik district, Bulgaria. Participants in the pack will be expected to arrive first in Stobi, Macedonia.

The nearest air terminal: Skopje, Macedonia (80 km/50 mi from Stobi), Thessaloniki, Greece (160 km/100 mi from Stobi) and Sofia (Bulgaria, 300 km/186 mi from Stobi but only 85 km/52 mi from the second pack's location: Varvara, Bulgaria) - don't forget checking the low cost flight options! If participants arrive at the first two airports, a transfer to Stobi may be arranged by request (Please, specify this in your application form!). Individual or group transfers' price may vary depending on both distance and number of passengers from 30 to 110 EUR.

How to get there? Stobi is located in the center of the Republic of Macedonia. It can be easily accessed by: 1. travelling by bus or car on the highway E-75 (from Athens, Greece to Belgrade, Serbia and Central Europe across Macedonia) - the highway exit STOBI is just in front of the site's entrance; 2. catching a bus/train from Skopje (Macedonia), Thessaloniki (Greece) - the stop is at Gradsko (5 km. away from Stobi), from there participants/visitors could get a taxi to Stobi or request a free pick-up available from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm on the arrival day (please ask for details); 3. from neighbouring towns of Negotino(15 km) and Kavadartsi (20 km) participants could get on a bus to Gradsko or on a taxi directly to Stobi.

   

Travel between the field school projects in the pack: Stobi, Macedonia is located about 300 km/186 mi from the village of Varvara, Bulgaria. The last could be reached by:

  1. (train/bus) Stobi (i.e. Gradsko) - Skopje, Macedonia- 1-1½ hrs then
  2. (bus) Skopje, Macedonia - Sofia, Bulgaria - 4½ hrs then
  3. (bus) Sofia - Karabunar - 2½ hrs  
  4. or(bus) Sofia - Plovdiv - Septemvri-Karabunar (NB! Change buses at Plovdiv and Septemvri!) - 2½ hrs.

Approximate cost of the entire trip: 25-30 EUR.

Participants will be fully supported by the BHFS when planning and arranging their trips between the pack's locations.

Academic Credits   

 

New Bulgarian University (NBU) grants up to 24 credits to students in European universities for participation in the field school project sessions that are part of the ANCIENT GREEK AND ROMAN PACK. Participation in any two-week/four-week session of each of the field school projects in the pack is awarded with 6/12 credit hours (ECTS)*. Participants in the various sessions of the pack can obtain maximum of 24 ECTS* credits (Please refer to the list below!). They are allowed to require credits only for particular field school project sessions in the Pack, so practically they have choice between 6, 12, 18 ECTS and 24 credits.

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) grants 12 semester credit units (equivalent to 18 quarter units) to all students

who study outside Europe for attending the four-week sessions of this field school pack (Please refer to the list below!)

Transcripts of Records (ToR) are available upon request for an additional tuition fee
