ANCIENT GREEK PACK (AGR.PACK 14)

DESCRIPTION: The pack is combination of two Balkan Heritage Field School (BHFS) projects focused on Ancient Greek Archaeology, History and Culture. It provides to either students or people interested in Archaeology and Ancient Greek World comprehensive experience (from four to eight weeks, covering the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods) at two different sites: an emporion and a sanctuary, located in Bulgaria. What is more choosing to participate in the pack’s proposals the BHFS participants will benefit from the considerably reduced admission fees, faster registration and the option to join a 5-day excursion to Istanbul, Turkey between the field school projects.

THE VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAM FLEXIBILITY MAKE THE PARTICIPATION IN THE PROJECT PACK SUITABLE FOR EITHER BEGINNERS OR ADVANCED IN FIELD ARCHAEOLOGY AND AN IDEAL OPTION FOR THEIR HOLIDAY AND BUDGET!

The PACK combines the following Balkan Heritage Field School (BHFS) projects:
  1. Apollonia Pontica Excavation Project (AP.EXC 14) on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast;
  2. Ancient Greeks in the Land of Dionysos - Excavation of Emporion Pistiros in Thrace, Bulgaria (PIS.EXC 14)

and the optional excursion to Istanbul, Turkey (28 July - 1 August, 2014).

Pack's locations: Sozopol and Varvara, Bulgaria. Participants in the pack will be expected to arrive first in Sozopol, Bulgaria.

The nearest air terminals: Burgas airport (45 km/28 mi), Varna airport (160 km/100 mi). Don't forget checking the low cost  flight options! If participants arrive at the one of these airports, a transfer to Sozopol may be arranged by request (Please, specify this in your application form!). Individual or group transfers' price may vary depending on both distance and number of passengers from 20 to 100 EUR. Ask for details!

How to get there? Bus lines connect Sozopol with Burgas and Sofia (the Bulgarian capital) and fast ferry lines connect it with Varna and Nesebar.

Travel between the field school projects in the pack: Sozopol is located about 300 km/186 mi from the village of Varvara. The last could be reached by:
    1. (bus) Sozopol - Plovdiv  - 4 hrs
    2. (bus) Plovdiv - Varvara - 1 hrs

    or

    1. (bus) Sozopol - Burgas - 40 min 
    2. (train) Burgas - Varvara (NB! Change trains at Septemvri!) - 6 hrs

      Approximate cost of the entire trip: 20 EUR.

      Participants will be fully supported by the BHFS when planning and arranging their trips between the pack's locations.

      Free time: The BHFS participants could take advantage of their stay in the Balkans and take the trip to Istanbul, Turkey organized only for BHFS participants by GoBalkans Ltd (Bulgarian travel agency) on 28 July - 1 August, 2014 between the field school projects. Look-up at some other suggested travel ideas!

      Credit hours: New Bulgarian University grants up to 18 credits to students for participation in the field school project sessions that are part of the ANCIENT GREEK PACK. Participation in one/two sessions of either the field school projects in the pack is awarded with 6/9 credit hours. So participants in the various sessions of the ANCIENT GREEK PACK could obtain between 6 and 18 credits (Please refer to the list below for details!). Transcripts of Records (ToR) are available upon request for an additional tuition fee. For details please read the BHFS Regulations for obtaining ToR!

      ANCIENT GREEKS IN THE LAND OF DIONYSOS - EXCAVATION OF EMPORION PISTIROS, THRACE - Sessions 1 and 2  (2 – 31 August, 2014).

      Admission fee: 4590 EUR* (app. 5970 USD. Check current exchange rates!).

      Number of credit hours available: 18 (9+9)

      * All participants in Apollonia Pontica Excavations who are willing to organize either their food or accommodation in Sozopol or both separately, oustide the project package, will receive a discount of 75 EUR per weeks (for each) and 150 EUR per week (for both) off the admission fee specified!
